Friends brings St. Louis All-Star Flavor to the Kids!
As baseball country descends upon Cardinal Nation to honor the game's best and brightest, some all-stars can get lost in the shuffle. That's when Friends of Kids with Cancer stepped up to the plate.
Local kids battling cancer were treated to an All-Star worthy party at each of the pediatric cancer centers in St. Louis. St. John's Mercy, Cardinal Glennon and Children's Hospitals received ballpark style hot dogs, Big League Chew, Cracker Jack and other baseball classics in honor of the Midsummer Classic here in town.
"These are the real all-stars, not those big guys playing a game," said Margie Sedlack, Program Director. "They deserve to be a part of this momentous occasion in St. Louis."
It takes more than food to experience a game at Busch Stadium, especially a time-honored event such as the All-Star Game. Instead of having to don those dingy hospital PJ's, each child received Friends of Kids with Cancer All-Star themed shirts. The sea of white and red baseball shirts turned the treatment centers into a raucous crowd of baseball fans. This was an authentic St, Louis baseball experience that the kids deserved, from a completely local organization that understands hometown baseball, and most importantly, how to improve the daily lives of kids with cancer.
Thank you so much to all the volunteers who help plan and put this event together in such a short time. In less than a week, the event was coordinated, the food and drinks were purchased and the shirts were created. A special thanks to Mark Morose of Regal Midwest for turning over the shirts that made the day so quickly.
"It still amazes me that so many people can coordinate together like this in a such a short amount of time," said Judy Ciapciak, Executive Director. "In 48 hours we had bought everything, packaged, decorated and delivered a memorable day to the kids. That takes something special."
