Friends of Kids with Cancer was founded in 1992 by parents of children undergoing treatment for cancer. The need of these children for help in their daily lives was so great and obvious to those who witnessed their struggles, that this charity was formed to help them. There are other organizations that support children with medical help or try to grant a “once in a lifetime” wish, but Friends is unique in that we try to make each and every day a little bit brighter for these young cancer victims. Our organization is not about research, although no one can dispute the importance of research and the hope of one day finding a cure for cancer. But, to cancer’s littlest victim, a child living day to day with the painful procedures involved in treatment, research is just another big word they don’t understand. The cures found tomorrow don’t mean much in their world. What is important to these children is getting through TODAY.
Friends of Kidswith Cancer tries to do everything it can to keep the children mentally upbeat to face the daily challenges of fighting cancer. Our mission is to provide these special kids and their families with the recreational, educational and emotional support they need during the long hours of chemotherapy, illness and isolation to make having cancer bearable.
We now offer fourteen different programs and services to the children and their families. Each program added has come at the request of the medical staffs at area hospitals and clinics treating these children for this devastating disease. What began as providing fun and diversion for the children as they received ever more toxic chemotherapy and radiation has been expanded into the vital areas of mental well being and educational support. It has become increasingly evident that a positive mental outlook can be as important as medicine for long-term survival of these young victims. Friends is devoted to providing these children with hope and a will to live that will aid them in their battle with their disease.
